The story behind the idea
The sacrifices you have to make to build the life God wants you to have will be hard. In fact, that is often an indicator that you're on the right path.
What stands out
It's about your effort, particularly for Christians, our effort to God, giving Him our best, the best we can be. For us as Christians, success is faithfulness, not fame, not being recognized or honored. Success is in the effort, not in the outcome, striving and learning and trying, not in what happens, because there are many variables to that, and often we're not even clear what God is going to do.
Why it matters
Your life is all it can ever be because you figured out every possible thing, decided on everything, and that's as far as you can go. The truth is, if that's the way you approach knowledge, then yeah, you have gone as far as you can go.
A faithful way forward
Level one, you said, I'm willing to work hard, get some support, and stay enthusiastic. Level two, I want to discipline my life so I can learn new things and I'm staying focused. It's time to exhibit poise, confidence, and some level of competitive greatness, which is how you would apply it to sports.
Put it into practice
You just do like Aurelius said, you just live out this life, and people don't get to pull the levers in your life. God shapes us into people who don't fall apart, who don't fall down when life gets heavy.
