Recognize the pattern
As you may be aware, I really enjoy reading books, books by men and women way smarter than me, hoping that their wisdom can change my life. And recently I've been reading a book by Darren Hardy called The Compound Effect, and it's been really good.
I'm reading it super slowly, so I probably referenced it like a month ago, but that's actually a compliment to the integrity of the content.
Why it matters
Maybe you try the five thousand things approach where you just dabble in all different kinds of book series and sermon series and different avenues, and you're just constantly sort of bringing in new factors, that's not going to do it. He chose a couple of preachers who he believes to be men of God, and he listened to their sermons every day on his way to work and back.
After not thirteen years, but just a few years, he had read through the Word of God multiple times and heard a lot of great study.
Make a different choice
They just cut a few dollars out of their budget every day, their coffee fund, a couple of other Amazon expenditures, and decided to repeat those small, wise decisions over and over again. Before you knew it, they had a more disciplined approach to all forms of spending, the debts were paid off, and they were building something they were proud of.
It wasn't about chasing the newest fad or buying in to the newest, most expensive seminar, which I've always thought was really silly, that you would pay someone a lot of money to teach you how to better handle your money.
Practice a better habit
Because remember, the key here isn't doing the right things, it's doing the right things day in and day out, over and over again, as naturally as you eat lunch and sleep and watch your favorite TV show. What is that point in every day when you will take that 20-minute walk to burn a few calories?
Make out a schedule, a routine, a day of success where you can look at it and say, I have scheduled into the day the few things, not many things, we don't do stress living here, we do stress-free living, the few things that if I could just keep those going, I'd get there.
Take the idea with you.
- 01Where do I see the problem or opportunity described in “Five Thousand Times: The Power of Repeated Choices” in my own life?
- 02What Scripture or spiritual principle in this study most needs my attention?
- 03What one specific change can I make this week to put this teaching into practice?
