The story behind the idea
Randy was a really good friend whom Bob had met at high school. Though Randy was not a student at the time, he was quite a bit older, but he would go to the school and he would talk to people about Jesus. He recalls that when he met Randy, he had a triumph motorcycle, a beard, and a girlfriend.
What stands out
You just heard this story with two characters, and maybe you're thinking, what can I learn from that? My question for you is, which of the two do you identify with? If you saw yourself as one of the characters in this story, which one would you be?
Why it matters
If they were going to jump off the edge into sin, that would be different. If they were going to completely abandon God, I would have to react in a certain way. Most of the time when people have ideas that I disagree with, they're just ideas that I disagree with.
A faithful way forward
Marriage has taught me that sometimes people just need you to listen. People just need to know that you're with them, that you care about them, and they don't need a list of directions to get out of the mess.
Put it into practice
You need to interact with people that way and move them along that way. Never mind, there are definitely things he said that we cannot say and things he knew that we cannot know, but we put ourselves, or at least I do, in the place of Jesus. Of course, the Samaritan woman, the one who is caught in mistakes, the one who is confused, the one who has the farthest to go is somebody else. It's the person that I might see in the world to share the gospel with.
