The story behind the idea
As we get into these seven secular sermons that are noted in the article by Joe Carter, you're going to see that some of these you cannot avoid. It's the life that you live, and you need to try to get a handle on what's happening. I hope by the time we get done, you say, you know what?
What stands out
It seeps into our culture, each of our minds, and we all see the need to change, and then we help each other do it. Or maybe the preacher preaches on something we all know and love, we just need to be reminded of, and the entire congregation and sort of shared consciousness goes, man, that is important. The point that he's making in the article is that that does not just happen in a church building under spiritual restraints.
Why it matters
Only those who believe in the Lord Jesus, only those whose morality is tied to him can be holy in the sight of God. I think corporations, just as an example, but really the entertainment industry has sold us this idea, and everybody's hearing it at the same time that being conscientious to others and to the environment is the best possible person you can be. That's a sermon we need to turn off and walk away from.
A faithful way forward
This one kind of hit home for me because I think taking care of my body is important and longevity matters a lot to me.
Put it into practice
Some of these other things, there's room for them in your life, but you need to really understand where they're trying to take you and make sure you check and balance it properly. I found myself with a pretty poor attitude towards people who could be taking better care of their bodies. I connected to spiritual things, like if they felt better, they could do more, but maybe really I'm just putting too much emphasis on what my social media feed and influences are leading me to focus on.
