The story behind the idea
Basically, if I put in maximum effort and it is not God's will, or I have not invited him to come along the journey with me, then it's a hopeless journey no matter how hard I try. On the other end, if I invite God to go along with me and make this happen and change the world and I'm not willing to work, the results won't come. The combination of the two, articulated in prayer, open to the presence of the Lord and pursued with great effort, well, in that case, the only thing that limits possibilities is God's will.
What stands out
He is a relentless advocate of prayer and honest conversation with God, of daily Bible reading, not as some effort to accomplish something, but as a turned eye toward the reality of God so that you can know the power of the one you serve. He and I have both featured in our teaching the grace to faith to life concept that God is so good and he's promised so much and he's given limitless resources to help. If we look to that and we know that he is with us and even working in ways that we cannot fully explain, but we trust them, we develop a thing called faith.
Why it matters
They've stopped striving, maybe in the category that means most of all, your spiritual walk, your life of faith unto salvation in Jesus. Every part of your life is in the name of the Lord and designed to be for his glory, but it may be your financial situation in life and how disciplined or loose you are with that.
A faithful way forward
When we convince ourselves that this isn't something I need to be disciplined in because it is beneath me, it just amounts to another excuse. As I was listening to him say that yesterday, I was thinking about a movie that the family and I watched the other night called Unsung Heroes. There's this Christian music promoter in Australia who loses his business, and he and his family fly all the way to Tennessee just to get work.
Put it into practice
He talks about how people blame their parents, they blame their bosses, they blame the system, the world ain't fair. From a secular standpoint, he says, you are the leader of your life, take responsibility for all that is in it. As I listened to that, I thought, what a great point.
