The story behind the idea
As we will see in Saul's life today, he made a foolish decision, that's what the text calls it.
What stands out
Foolishness, the wrong move, worldliness or selfishness, there are a hundred different ways to go. In other words, it's really easy to be a fool, but it takes discipline and incredible trust in the nearness of God to act in faith. I know I said the deck was stacked against us, but after laying all that out there, I feel like it may be even worse than that.
Why it matters
He's saying, Saul, something about your heart got revealed here today, and God is seeking someone with a different heart. Before we get too far down the road here, did you hear the reasonings of Saul that led him to doing this?
A faithful way forward
His ultimate point is look, I had to take matters into my own hands. No, I didn't do it God's way, but I did it in faith and it was the only option. Saul would say, I acted in faith because the circumstances demanded it.
Put it into practice
I have to say, I'm a little bit uncomfortable imitating Jonathan in that story. I think he had some information from God that maybe we don't know of here where God is sending him up. The point is he was so confident in what God had said and who he was that he made no excuses, he let no fear stop him, he acted decisively and courageously, and he accomplished by faith what his dad failed to do in foolishness.
