The story behind the idea

There are still passages that speak past it into the final return of Jesus, which is in our future, but this is not one of them. On my part, for years, I just pass over text like this. I read these incredible things that Jesus is saying to the Jews, to the disciples, so that they will be ready when that day comes and they will be properly prepared to avoid the destruction.

What stands out

Maybe you'll learn a few things about the destruction of Jerusalem, and then I'll move into the moral points that I think that you can use. There was a Roman siege led by a man named Titus in 70 AD.

Why it matters

He talks about not defending yourself, but defending the truth and uttering the things that were of God. For us, we do that through knowing and sharing the scripture and the power of Jesus. We make it about him when things get hard and not ourselves.

A faithful way forward

You have the light of Christ in you and reflecting off of you. The darker the world gets, the more of Jesus people should experience in you. One way I know I'm not prepared for the judgment is when things get harder and darker and scarier, I get quieter, I run and hide, and I let fear and doubt impede the message of the truth. The gospel historically has always thrived under persecution where people had to decide what am I going to do with this?

Put it into practice

They do their sleeping at night, their drinking at night, but we put on faith, love, and hope for the obtaining of salvation through Jesus Christ. Listen, if your heart is not filled with faith and love and hope now, how are you ready for the judgment? Do we expect that all to just get repaired in the moment that we lay it all before the Lord?
