The story behind the idea
Enjoy them, but they always fit around number one, who you are in Christ. Number two, how you are valuable to Christ by the way you love and serve others. Then all of those things are there to facilitate that and not to draw from it. Number three, and this pertains directly to Nick, like you have a great, interesting, expressive personality.
What stands out
You can't be religious, committed to scripture and believers, and not be spiritual, filled with love and joy and peace and patience and a spirit of belief in God. Unchurched, as we say, people, not those who make strictly biblical decisions, but they believe that they have this personal relationship with God that will reward them in the end.
Why it matters
You're not going to say because I'm not disciplined, or because my priorities are all messed up, or because I don't love God enough. It's easy to say there's a bunch of hypocrites down there, and I wouldn't worship at a place like that or take my kids there, and it's just a kind of excuse. I will also say that this hypocrisy business is vastly overstated.
A faithful way forward
We don't see those things anymore and go, man, I shouldn't be looking at this, and this isn't right, and those people need Jesus. We are entertained and we go, well, that's just the way the world is. Before long you're thinking, I still want to be a Christian, but I want all of that too, because it's not a stark contrast to Christianity to me anymore.
Put it into practice
We learn that bitterness towards others and trying to make life about me and ignoring the rules that govern good behavior.
