The story behind the idea

Christ and his example and character and teaching, his apostles and prophets and ministry and scripture, they must guide your life. No one can come in and make up adjacent rules to implement into your life in the name of Jesus. When these men were boys when they were young, their parents would give them rules that were black and white Bible principles and add a lot of other protective things as well.

What stands out

The scripture's saying they have no right to do that. Even Judaism, which is based on a given law of God, was just a mere shadow, and now the substance belongs to Christ. Some in those days were teaching verse 18 self-abasement, which means just no denial of self, can't do this, can't do that. Maybe the scripture doesn't say it, but we're saying it, and that's the way it's got to be.

Why it matters

Paul is saying, Look, God doesn't care about those idols, and if your conscience is clear, you can eat those meats. Or maybe the Sabbath day, if you don't follow those laws religiously, God has changed over that law.

A faithful way forward

All of a sudden, my decisions have this wider aspect to them. Should I go see this or go participate in that or hang out with these people or wear this or do that? I've got to decide how's that going to affect my fellow brother, or my parents, or in my case, spouse, or even my children, especially my children.

Put it into practice

At the local church here at Lyndale, we have a lot of conversions with guys from this mission that we teach and people from all over. So there's all kinds of different people in the room. Lately there's been quite a bit of uh applause or sort of hoopla when someone is baptized.
