What to remember
I need to quit taking things so personally, especially when those who differ with me don't even know I exist or care about my life.
I remember part of an old quote that said, You should be able to state your argument to your opponent as good as they do.
Key Scriptures
Proverbs 1811 Peter 3

The story behind the idea

He is a professor at Florida College in Tampa and just generally a very well-studied and astute guy. My opinion is that he keeps a pretty good pulse of the way social media is used by God's people. He's seen really good things and he's seen some not so good things, and he's kind of commenting towards that. I think what I appreciate most, and probably the number one thing I need to share with you before we jump in, is that he is addressing all of it to himself.

What stands out

Here in number three, he uses one of these modern terms, canceling someone. Basically, this means someone is writing something or podcasting something or posting something that you disagree with vehemently, and your initial target goal is to marginalize them, to turn people against them. If I can make it where nobody listens to what they say or they're completely suspicious of this person, then it won't matter what they say.

Why it matters

If I'm reacting to headlines and not carefully considering what was actually said or done, I do not deserve a place at the table of discussion until I back off and do my due diligence. I need to be able to consider the possibility that I'm wrong about something and willing to change if the evidence warrants it. This principle is good all the way across the board, whether it's political headlines or economic stuff or church stuff, it doesn't matter what the stuff is. Technology has done some damage to our attention spans, we want the quick blurb point, and then we run with it.

A faithful way forward

If someone has been unkind, if they have crossed that line in social media in public or in private, my first impulse ought to be to pray for them, for God to be at work in their lives. If they have behaved in some way that says something negative about their character, I pray for God to help them be free from that ensnarment.

Put it into practice

Then lastly, number 12, Doy writes, Above all and most importantly, I will seek to glorify God. I need to do all in the name of Christ and to the glory of God. I will rely on God's word as the revealed standard from God and seek to please him in all matters.

Think about it
