The story behind the idea
There needs to be some clear direction in the way we raise our young men and what we teach to them that matters. Everything God shares is important, but there are some crucial elements to the teachings of God that have such an exponential result on your life, you must attend to them with priority. If you have come through this younger phase in life, be someone who sets a good example. Number one, I need the principles of Proverbs 31 at the age of 46, just like Luke, my son does at the age of 21, and most absolutely my son Nick at age 14.
What stands out
I know you will not be perfect, particularly in the mind, but the fight is worth it. Never stop fighting, praying, asking for God's help, asking for the Holy Spirit's help, asking for Jesus' help, asking for help from friends. If you want to be someone who establishes himself in integrity and you don't want to be destroyed, stay away from the ways that destroy kings. Like giving your strength, your body, yourself to women, plural, to those with whom you have no right.
Why it matters
Let's be a servant, a helper, an encourager of those who truly are, like in the previous verses, living in poverty or bitterness or perishing. I don't know how to emphasize this enough, and I feel like I need to back up and talk to mom and dad, grandma, and grandpa for a minute.
A faithful way forward
All right, this takes us to the largest chunk of Proverbs 31, the better known section, point number four: choose an excellent wife of faith. Choose a partner who loves God more than they love you, who carries out service just like you're trying to learn to do, who does not compromise themselves with selfishness and sin. Proverbs 31 has all of these industrious ideas of a woman who does so many wonderful things, but at the heart of what she is doing is verse 25.
Put it into practice
Try to choose someone that is growing like you're growing and who wants to be a servant of the king. Number five here, if you, young man, have chosen a girl like that and you're in love, you're engaged, you're married, you've started a family, just remember that while you've chosen an excellent wife of faith, you, number five, need to be an excellent, godly, supportive husband.
