The story behind the idea
Carl hopped up and high-fived a bunch of us and worked his way down to the front. It immediately made me think of the prices right when they call someone's name to come down for the bidding. In the middle of all of that was Joe's speech, and I really thought about just reading it for you.
What stands out
He said, I'm living in a trailer, I'm freezing to death, I'm starving, and I'm thinking that the end is near. For one of the first times in his adult life, he prays to God for help for some deliverance and safety.
Why it matters
I not only survived that, but I gave up drugs after that, and I've completely turned my life around.
A faithful way forward
Praise God indeed for his mercy and his patience and his protection of Joe through those points in his life. No doubt it saddened the Lord to see it go on for so long. Maybe you know someone like that, or maybe in some ways you are that person.
Put it into practice
It is the willingness to be honest about my mistakes, to confess them to the Lord without excuse, and to be so transparent and humble that I will share them with someone I trust to get their help. Number five, in recovery, the letter V, voluntarily submit to any and all changes God wants to make in my life and humbly ask him to remove my character defects. This from Matthew chapter five, verse six, blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.
