The story behind the idea

If you have to shrink God, minimizing him, where he is and what he is doing until he gets small enough so that you can fully understand it, so that you can fully either measure it or prove it, then you have made God far too small. God cannot be shrunk down to our ability to understand, especially while we're living in mortal bodies under the limitations of the flesh. When it comes to the Holy Spirit, it seems to me in my past I have spoken of things that he could not do, that he would not do, that he is not doing, because it became easier for me to understand.

What stands out

When you think about God's promises and power, you can stand there and say, I am 100% saved in the Lord Jesus. Then when you see what he challenges you to do every day and the reality of the shortcomings of that settles in, it can become a real stumbling block to confidence unless we understand the relationship between them.

Why it matters

I think even the most safest or frightened of people has to say that cannot be talking about just Bible knowledge, information. In fact, there are many people who have lots of Bible knowledge, but who do not have the Spirit filling and flourishing in their life and who are not living a moral life. Those are verses that can help with the indwelling concept, maybe not an explanation that we can wrap a bow around, but acceptance of something beautiful.

A faithful way forward

He is in our body, 1 Corinthians 6, among God's people, 1 Corinthians 3. What I want to do in the last few minutes is I just want to show you from the text eight things that the Holy Spirit does, and I will not explain them.

Put it into practice

We can't make ourselves as big as God, no more than make him as small as us, but that's where the Holy Spirit is helping in words and groanings and power. I don't want you to sit there for ten more minutes and get me to give you my preacher take on how to categorize all those things.

Think about it

Take the idea with you.
