The story behind the idea
Here's what's interesting about the few minutes worth of dialogue that I'm going to share with you from a recent interview. I could easily go back to 2022 and share short clips where Scotty Scheffler talks about the two most important people in his life, Jesus and Meredith. They now have a son, Bennett, who was born last year, and he features these people in so many conversations.
What stands out
He's in this room in Europe, he's surrounded by people who worship the game of golf and its players, many of whom have priorities that are not set on Christ and family. Here is the guy at the top of the heap, the number one player.
Why it matters
Work hard and labor for success if you want to, but that cannot be your purpose and you cannot expect things from it that it simply cannot provide. You have to find your peace, hope, and direction in the Lord Jesus and in the sphere of influence that God has created, and you will still wrestle, I know I do, with money and growth and accomplishment. Maybe if I just get something there, it'll fill something.
A faithful way forward
You can be really successful in areas of life, but the journey of the hard work of pursuing it has got to wrap itself kind of tangentially around a life that's very fulfilling. We can't be expecting some distant payoff to make it all worthwhile because there's nothing in this world that can be that for you.
Put it into practice
I feel for him now just as much as I did then, and tomorrow's going to be as good or better. There is no burnout with the central things of life that God pre-designed relationship with his son, relationship with loved ones from the beginning. To compare that with other ventures, let me get back to Scotty near the end of the interview. He said, speaking about golf, we work so hard for something that's so fleeting.
